The Soopsworld Week In Links : Pixelicious, SATC2, Christina Aguilera & M.I.A, Arcade Fire and Spotify Disco Al Desko

First of all, it’s not just about discovering & sharing musical treasure in Soopsworld, y’know – following on from Mr Ronson’s pixelicious(and horn-section free, phew)  Circuit Breaker video debut t’other day, the inevitable ripples of all things pixel have popped up on my t’internet radar. Fans of eBoy quite possibly will do a little whoop of excitement on seeing THESE BAD BOYS = a-frickin-mazing. Keeping up with the creative footwear theme, the always stylish  Cool Hunting tipped me off to The Sneaker Colouring Book , the publisher are running a competition to win £100 of their books too so download the designs here, colour in your bestest designs and email them here before this Monday (31st May).

Second up, may I just apologise to my demographic for my failure to get remotely excited by the UK release (or any other country’s for that matter) of Sex And The City 2. I’m sorry, I just aint feeling it, however, here’s a nice link to the trailer so you can get all whooped up into a frenzy before you go see it. Manolo-tastic.

Before I get to the link cloud, may I please bring your attention to the ridiculously catchy, DESERVES to be Top 10 ‘We Want To’ by New Young Pony Club which was released a couple of weeks ago.

Ever since baby bro included it in his Spotify Disco Al Desko playlist (wimbledon, usa for the curious) t’other week, I have been OBSESSED with it, buy it immediately.

On the link cloud this week it’s as random as ever, we’ve got a website where you can create your own beatbox, uber-pop from Christina Aguilera’s collaboration with M.I.A, we’ve got the recently tweeted Arcade Fire tracks, the gorgeous Follow Me Down by UNKLE (ordered my copy of the album today – it’s delicious), the Miike Snow track ‘The Rabbit’ because they’re outrageously talented beings that everyone should see play live at least once in a lifetime, the MySpace link for Metric so you can try before you buy and, cos I haven’t mentioned them for a while – my favourite White Rabbits track off their album It’s Frightening (listen to it in an open space, full volume if possible – when the piano solo kicks in, it blows your senses)

Have it:

The Soopsworld Week in Links: Hurts/EverythingEverything/Darwin Deez, More Free Culture Please & Disco Al Desko

What a week. Monday night I went to the NME-fest at Koko to witness an eclectic combination of bands to put it politely. First we saw was Darwin Deez – who would be from Dalston if they weren’t from Brooklyn let’s just put it that way. I’ve been obsessed with the effervescent, endorphin-inducing single ‘Radar Detector’ for the past couple of weeks and their performance was all that, complete with dance routines to 80s classics and more contemporary stuff (I whooped with delight at the Miike Snow ‘Animal’ sequence, I confess). I was relieved to be honest, the lack of pretension that came with goofing around in such a manner made them far more endearing than they would have been if they’d just stood and wafted Williamsburg pretention at us.

Everything Everything, the main reason my companions wanted to go because one them is pretty much OBSESSED with them and hasn’t shut up about them for the past few weeks. I liked them, the vocal could get on your tits after a while but any band that has song titles like Photoshop Handsome and My Keys, Your Boyfriend is going to get bonus points in my book… ‘Suffragette, Suffragette’ s chorus has a line that sounds  like ‘Who’s gonna sit on your face when I am gone’ which I’m afraid makes me cackle with glee every time I hear it. Yeah I know, grow up Soops…

Hurts, the headliners were basically stunning. Maybe in the context of their predecessors before them or  because, I dunno, they weren’t wearing plaid and beards, they seemed so stylish, so, well, sophisticated . Despite hanging from one of the side-balconies (looks great to the other punters but you can’t see sh*t so not recommended if you actually want to SEE a band at Koko), I was utterly bewitched, go see them if you get the chance. In the meantime, you can hear their single Better Than Love on Hype Machine here. HOWEVER, if you go the link cloud you can click on the link to hear my old mucker from uni, Neil Parnell aka Tronik Youth’s edit – the man has style and always has done, let’s just leave it at that.

Finally, a friend told me that part of the Tories plans were to scrap free entry to galleries and museums amongst other things. I don’t know about you but ever since hearing about our new ‘taupe’(blue with a tinge of yellow = taupe, no?) government, this makes me want to take in as much free culture as possible while we might have the chance. Lingering Whispers at The Crypt, St Pancras Church sounds pretty incredible (see link cloud for details), if any of you want to go too, shout me up.

Have a great week!

Soopsworld’s Spotify Disco Al Desko

This week’s Spotify Disco Al Desko we have FOUR djs, Nicole K, Felix,  my brother (of introducing me to BoH fame) Alex and Rob from Something Serious, my favorite London indie night.

The Summer is ahoy – Nicole K

wimbledon,usa – Alex C

“It’s more likely that all four of The Beatles would be getting back together than us reforming” – Felix

Each year we are graced by the reformation of some pioneer bands that decided to leave aside their differences and play the music that made them famous together once again. I can’t recall the feeling that I encountered when I heard that The Verve would be playing together again, they shaped the music that I am into and as such when I heard they reformed I couldn’t quite believe it after all they famously said “It’s more likely that all four of the Beatles would be getting back together than us reforming”. It appears that you can never put a band to rest, this playlist is a compilation of bands which I could hardly believe that I was seeing live or that they decided to play music together.

All Back to Something Serious – Rob Something Serious

Rob’s night, Something Serious is monthly at the Phoenix (back of Oxford St), a rare gem of an indie night where pretention remains minimal, the bar prices are normal and the door price is cheap = awesome!

Sometimes, if you don’t fancy socializing in your canteen, you’re on packed lunches or you just fancy doing lunch Al Desko, the internet can be a wonderful wonderful thing. Recently I’ve been shamelessly nerding out on Twitter for links, wading through newsletters and for the film section, I basically pulled all the trailers off YouTube for all the film posters I’d seen on my travels this week. First up two things specifically t’internet-focussed are the Webbys where you get to go on the site and vote for all the clips and websites you think are awesome. There’ll be some virals you recognize but a few you won’t so worth an explore: http://webby.aol.com/.

mflow has been described as a cross between Itunes and Twitter, it’s basically an online music store that lets you share your taste with others. I’ve not had the chance to get into it properly yet but if you are and you rate it, let me know. And on to the rest of the week’s noteable links…

This Week I Have Mostly Been Listening To:

Darwin Deez ‘Radar Detector’  http://hypem.com/track/1091372/Darwin+Deez+-+Radar+Detector

Charlotte Gainsbourg ’Time Of Assassins’ http://hypem.com/track/1095353/tim+chester+-+Time+of+the+Assassins+XXX+Change+Remix+

Health ‘USA Boys’   http://hypem.com/track/1095308/HEALTH+-+USA+Boys

The new LCD Soundsystem album ‘This Is Happeninghttp://www.lcdsoundsystem.com/thisishappening/

I also downloaded for free and loved  Fools Day’ – Blur ( http://www.blur.co.uk/ )

Worth An Orange Wednesday?

It’s A Wonderful Afterlife.

Verdict: Total chick flick (with Mahesh from Heroes = win) so maybe Orange Wednesday with the girls but more likely DVD. Don’t you REALLY hate it when film trailers give the ending away?

The Ghost Writer

Verdict: Low priority DVD, Ewan’s a bit meh isn’t he?

Extract

Verdict: Orange Wednesday.

The Joneses

Verdict: Orange Wednesday.

Agora

Verdict: I think I’d rather watch Armageddon. I don’t think I need to elaborate any further.

FYI

Those of you that enjoyed the post Brighton Beach, YSL 100s and Julie Driscoll – I’ll always have a soft spot for Mods from a few months ago, might find it interesting that the  mod club in London I mentioned that my friend had visited was Blow Up then at The Wag Club, it’s current incarnation is now at 4 Denmark Street, handy link: http://www.blowupclub.com/default.aspx

Soopsworld’s Spotify Disco Al Desko

Hang on, WTF is a Spotify Disco Al Desko you may well be asking yourself? Basically myself and  couple of mates compile a playlist for each week for your listening pleasure as you munch your sandwiches or whatever it is you’re doing at your computer. You’re very welcome.

The Week In Links

My brother, not One Tree Hill, introduced me to the exquisite Band Of Horses with their first album Everything All The Time and like a lot of people, the first time I heard The Funeral, I had a full on emo moment where everything suddenly felt like it was running in slow motion and was terribly meaningful. To say it haunts your senses would be an understatement. Ceases To Begin, the second album, is equally stunning so I am full-on well excited about hearing their new album Infinite Arms out on May 17th.

Anyway, I saw them at Koko in Camden with some of my nearest & dearest  and they were predictably flippin AWESOME.

Tuesday was a crap day until I went to the cinema with aforementioned brother and saw… KICK ASS! No really, if you don’t like this movie, I might just reconsider our whole friendship. And you think I’m joking.

Think the closest I’m going to get to being a hero this year is by once again being an Info Girl on one of the information points at Glastonbury Festival. Cape and thigh high boots unlikely however if you are lost, need to know what time a band’s due to play and where or need sunscreen or condoms = Soops will save the day alongside all the other lovely volunteers. Truths From The Shallow End

Probably as a comeback to a sly remark from another family member on the lack of depth of conversation at a recent family event, I very ‘kindly’ emailed a brief summary of recent hot spots of mainstream popular culture to my (undoubtedly bemused) uncle in Belgium. I briefed him through Glee, Twilight and the uses of asterix to indicate actions within texts, emails, etc and promised him a Twitter tutorial upon our next meeting in the summer. He's yet to reply to thank me profusely. My tongue was obviously placed in my cheek but it did make me think about why pop culture can be important as a social tool. Obviously I appreciate that individuality is a thing to be encouraged and celebrated, but it’s also important to reach out to other people and find common ground, to communicate – popular culture is an obvious way of doing this.

While I have had my neuroses earlier in the year of dragging my cultural intake out of the shallow end (still plodding on, managed to make it through Question Time AND a couple of Newsnights last week without swearing out loud at the slimy politicians = all time first), it struck me that the snobs in this world, and you are snobs wherever you are – let’s not try and dress this up, were actually doing themselves a disservice by proudly insisting on remaining ignorant on such matters. Fine, you may not want to lower yourself to the realms of X Factor, Glee and suchlike but A LOT of people, quite probably people you interact with every day ARE interested in watching programmes like this for various reasons – would it not hurt to watch just the one show or pop on Facebook so you know enough to hold a conversation on the subject?

Noone’s asking you to enjoy it but even if the morbid fascination on what on earth it is that is compelling people to watch these shows (there aren’t any subliminal messages, I’m pretty certain of this before you suggest it) doesn’t get the better of you, isolating yourself socially as well as culturally by refusing to have any interest in pop culture whatsoever is a position I’m afraid I look down on with disdain, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage by remaining ignorant. Now there’s a delicious irony for you.
